MONDAY:
James 1:2-4 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of
many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let
perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
o Hard to think of joy when you’re in the middle of a trial.
o But James wants us to think not only of what we’re going thru, but also how the trial is
making us stronger.
o Producing perseverance is not a fun process, but it is necessary. Without it, James says
we won’t become mature or complete.
o What sort of trials are you facing? What can we do to help or pray for you?
TUESDAY: Romans 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
o Romans 12 is full of practical ways to live out your faith and show love to your neighbor.
o Joyful In Hope means that no matter what is going on around us, and no matter where
we are at the time, we are constantly looking ahead. As followers of Christ, we are
never without hope.
o Patient In Affliction means embracing difficulty, & trusting God to work out a good
outcome. (For example, Job had everything taken from him, yet he praised the Lord.)
o Faithful In Prayer means regularly and consistently communicating with God, seeking
His presence, and listening for guidance. We should set aside time to pray, even during
times of difficulty, joy, or uncertainty.
o How would these attributes, or any others that stand out in Romans 12, help improve
your faith?
WEDNESDAY: Matthew 13:44 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a
man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
o This parable shows the value of the kingdom of heaven, and also being a part of the
Kingdom here and now.
o In joy, he sold everything he had to buy that field. People must have thought he was
crazy for getting rid of everything.
o In their mind he was losing everything. In his mind he was gaining everything.
o What would devastate you if you lost it? Would you give up on God if you lost it, or
would you be willing to trust Him even still?
THURSDAY: 1 Thessalonians 5:16 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all
circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
o As closing instructions for his letter, Paul reminds us to rejoice, pray, and give thanks.
o This command is counter-cultural. Somedays it can be as difficult as swimming
upstream.
o Joy and happiness are not the same thing. Paul isn’t telling us to be happy about every
detail of our lives.
o Happiness depends on circumstance. If things are going up, you feel up, but if things are
going down, you feel down. An emotional roller coaster.
o Joy is stability and celebration on the inside, regardless of circumstances on the outside.
o We choose to rejoice because of what God is doing behind the scenes.
o We pray to be reminded that even when it doesn’t seem like it, God is working in all
things.
o We give thanks because even when things are bad, God is still good.
FRIDAY: Matthew 7:13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy
that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the
way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
o This can be a scary passage.
o There are 2 paths. Only 2. No middle ground.
o 1 is filled with people. The other is deserted.
o 1 is smooth and easy. The other is rough and difficult.
o 1 is easy to find. The other isn’t.
o As different as the roads are, the most important thing to notice is their destination.
o 1 leads to destruction, the other leads to life.
o Everyone thinks they will stay on the wide road and exit right before the destruction
starts and start walking the narrow road.
o But you don’t know when the road ends or where the destruction begins. No one does.
o Get off the dangerous road now while you have the chance!
o How do I know I’m on the right road? Make sure you’re following Jesus.
o Keep studying your bible, keep praying, keep trying to be more like Him in every way.
